Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno appoints his daughter, Mrs. Helen Eno Obareki, as the Acting First Lady

Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno recently announced the appointment of his daughter, Mrs. Helen Eno Obareki, as the Acting First Lady, following the passing of his wife, Pastor Patience Umo Eno. This decision was shared during a condolence visit by Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, and other dignitaries in Uyo on October 4.

Governor Umo Eno’s heartfelt statement revealed the deep love and respect he had for his late wife. “I married her when she was 19, and I was 22. I called her Oluwa-Kemi because she was truly a gift from God. We went through many challenges together, and her passing is an irreplaceable loss for me.” He expressed his commitment to continuing her legacy through their daughter Helen, who will work closely with the Deputy Governor and the Commissioner for Women’s Affairs and Social Welfare.

Pastor Patience Umo Eno’s passing on September 26, 2024, sent shockwaves throughout Akwa Ibom State. The First Lady was known for her humanitarian work, particularly through her pet project, the Golden Initiative For All (GIFA), which aimed to address societal challenges. Her absence was deeply felt during the 37th anniversary of Akwa Ibom on September 23.

The state government has since flown flags at half-mast at all government buildings and facilities as a symbol of collective grief and mourning. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) also suspended local government campaign activities for the October 5 council elections as a mark of respect.

President Bola Tinubu described the late First Lady as an embodiment of humility, resilience, and loyalty, acknowledging her passion for serving the people of Akwa Ibom State. Her legacy will undoubtedly continue through her family and the initiatives she established.
