The Nigeria Police Force has made a significant breakthrough in curbing electoral violence in Edo State by arresting two suspected political thugs and seizing firearms during overnight raids. This timely move comes just hours before the state’s governorship election.
The Arrests
The suspects, Edwin Obanor, 43, and Audu Tajudeen, 41, a PDP member from Ugbogbo quarters, Igara Akoko area, were apprehended following a tip-off that they were armed to cause mayhem and disrupt the election. Obanor, reportedly a leader of an armed group, was arrested at Oredo Ward 4 around 9 pm, while Tajudeen was taken into custody at Igara Akoko, Edo.
Seized Firearms
Upon searching their belongings, police recovered:
- Three cut-to-size locally fabricated pistols from Obanor
- One locally-made gun from Tajudeen
The Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, confirmed these developments in a statement, highlighting the police’s proactive efforts to maintain law and order during the election period. This swift action aims to prevent potential electoral violence and ensure a peaceful voting process in Edo State.
