Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN) Sounds Alarm
The Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN) has warned that if urgent steps are not taken to support poultry farmers, prices of eggs may increase from the current N5,500 to N10,000 per crate.
Reasons for the Price Hike
- High Transportation Costs: Fuel subsidy removal has led to increased costs for poultry farmers.
- Indiscriminate Feed Price Increases: Millers have raised feed prices, adding to the burden on farmers.
- Neglect of the Poultry Subsector: The government’s lack of attention to the industry has left business owners to fend for themselves.
PAN’s Demands
- Government Intervention: Declare a state of emergency on egg production.
- Inclusion in Decision-Making: Involve PAN in government intervention activities.
- Support for Poultry Farmers: Provide relief to cushion the high costs of feed and transportation.
Impact on Consumers
- Significant price increase: From N5,500 to N10,000 per crate.
- Reduced access to protein: Nigerians may struggle to afford eggs.
PAN’s Secretary Speaks Out
Musa Hakeem, Secretary of PAN’s FCT Chapter, emphasized the need for urgent government intervention. “We cannot afford to depend on importation of eggs. The government must declare a state of emergency on egg production.”
Agro Dealer’s Concerns
Jude Arikogu, an Agro Dealer, lamented the indiscriminate increase in feed prices and inaccurate measurement. “A 25kg bag of feed is hardly up to 23kg when put on our scale.”
Timeline
- Now: Egg prices at N5,500 per crate.
- Future: Potential price increase to N10,000 per crate if no government intervention.
