Nigeria Police Force has responded to allegations made by Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara

The Nigeria Police Force has responded to allegations made by Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, stating that their actions in the state conform with a court order barring them from participating in the local government elections. According to Muyiwa Adejobi, force spokesperson, the police deployment was solely for security purposes due to heightened tensions and potential threats.

Adejobi clarified that the police were adhering to a Federal High Court order prohibiting their involvement in the Rivers State elections. The order was served to both the police and the state government, and the inspector-general of police instructed the commissioner of police in Rivers State to ensure compliance.

However, on October 3, 2024, reports emerged that police officers from the Rivers State Government House had been deployed to assist the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RIEC) with the election. In response, the Inspector-General authorized the Commissioner of Police to withdraw those officers and replace them with personnel from the Command Operations Department for overnight security.

The police condemned Governor Fubara’s allegations, calling for restraint and stating that threats of violence and arson over local elections are unacceptable. The NPF reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property and pledged to work alongside other security agencies to maintain order in Rivers State.
