Nigerian Bar Association Demands Investigation into Bobrisky Bribery Allegations

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has called for a comprehensive investigation into the serious allegations of bribery involving Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, and some officers of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

In a statement released on Wednesday, NBA President Mazi Afam Osigwe (SAN) emphasized the need for an independent inquiry, urging the EFCC to:

  1. Investigate allegations of ₦15 million bribe paid by Bobrisky to serve his prison sentence in a private residence.
  2. Determine if financial inducement was made to drop money laundering charges against Bobrisky.

Key Demands:

  • Independent investigation involving the Attorney General of the Federation and the Office of the National Security Adviser.
  • Swift and thorough investigation to establish the truth.
  • Presumption of innocence for all individuals and institutions accused.

The NBA cautioned against hasty judgment, particularly regarding Femi Falana (SAN)’s alleged involvement, stressing the importance of maintaining the integrity of the legal profession.

“The NBA insists that any person found complicit must face the full weight of the law. We acknowledge the presumption of innocence until proven guilty, but a thorough investigation is crucial to establish the truth.”

The outcome of this investigation will significantly impact Nigeria’s legal system’s integrity.

Investigation Timeline:

  • Investigation commencement: Immediate
  • Investigation conclusion: To be determined

Stakeholders Involved:

  • Nigerian Bar Association (NBA)
  • Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC)
  • Attorney General of the Federation
  • Office of the National Security Adviser

This development underscores the NBA’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring accountability in Nigeria’s justice system.
