Professor Isa Ali-Pantami, the former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, has called for the removal of immunity

Professor Isa Ali-Pantami, the former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, has called for the removal of immunity for Nigerian politicians, stating that it’s not recognized in Islam. Currently, the President, Vice President, Governors, and their Deputies enjoy immunity under Section 308 of the 1999 Constitution.

Pantami emphasized that abolishing this Act will foster transparency and accountability in governance, as immunity has proven problematic for many leaders after leaving office. He noted that Islam doesn’t support immunity for leaders, and under Islamic rule of law, every citizen, including leaders, can be questioned and dragged to court.

He cited examples of prominent Islamic leaders, such as Ali ibn Abi Talib and Umar ibn Khatab, who were held accountable and taken to court. Pantami stressed that the rule of law is key and that there must be equality before the law.

This statement is in line with Pantami’s previous advocacy for accountability and good governance. During his tenure as Minister, he implemented various initiatives to promote digital economy and good governance.

  • Removal of Immunity: Pantami calls for the removal of immunity for Nigerian politicians.
  • Islamic Perspective: He states that Islam doesn’t recognize immunity for leaders.
  • Accountability: Abolishing immunity will foster transparency and accountability in governance.
  • Rule of Law: Pantami emphasizes the importance of equality before the law.
